Labor plays railway Russian roulette

Federal Member for Pearce, Christian Porter, said that Bill Shorten and WA Labor are playing political games, putting the future of Ellenbrook Rail at risk.

In April last year, WA Labor signed a city deal with the Federal Liberal Government agreeing to build major infrastructure projects, including Ellenbrook Rail. The Federal Liberal Government made good on that deal, allocating $500 million in the 2018 Budget, ensuring the project would become a reality.

Today’s announcement from Bill Shorten seriously calls into question Mark McGowan and WA Labor’s commitment to the project.

“The Federal Liberal Government had a deal with WA Labor to fund Ellenbrook Rail on a 50-50 basis,” Mr Porter said.

“WA Labor’s flip-flopping on this project is getting ridiculous – construction could have started if they weren’t so interested in playing politics.

“Mark McGowan needs to come clean with the people of Ellenbrook. Is the deal his government made in April 2018 still on the table or will he betray the people in our community and cut the funding to build Ellenbrook Rail?

“In May last year, we didn’t just promise, we delivered. The Federal Liberal Government secured $500 million because we know how important Ellenbrook Rail is to our community.

“If WA Labor can’t fund their half of Ellenbrook Rail, then they should be telling us the truth, not joining Bill Shorten to make more promises that they will never be able to keep.”
