The notorious York-Merredin Road is now safer for all drivers, with the first upgrades under the Regional Road Safety Package completed.
Federal Member for Pearce, Christian Porter, said fixing York-Merredin Road had been one of his top priorities.
“Between 2012 and 2016 around 35 per cent of crashes on York-Merredin Road involved fatal or serious injury – compared to a state-wide rate of just five per cent,” Mr Porter said.
“These safety upgrades are essential in addressing a crash rate three times above the state average along this dangerous stretch of road.
“The upgrades will reduce the risk of run-off road crashes by widening the road to a nine-metre-wide lane seal and a one-metre-wide shoulder seal.”
A further 4.5 kilometre section near Dangin will also be addressed, with construction expected to start in 2018. The Regional Road Safety Package is part of a $1.6 billion Liberal Government commitment towards a $2.3 billion road and rail infrastructure investment in Western Australia.
The Liberal Government has committed $3.9 million to the York and Dangin projects on York-Merredin Road.
