Federal Member for Pearce, Christian Porter, said that it is about time Mark McGowan and WA Labor get on board with the push to get the Mitchell Freeway further extended to Romeo Road.
“The community support for this vital piece of infrastructure has been overwhelming – over 2,500 people have signed my petition to make it a reality,” Mr Porter said.
“Everyone I speak to in our northern suburbs – from Butler to Yanchep – tells me how much the extension is needed and that is why I’ve been fighting for it in Canberra.
“It appears Mark McGowan and WA Labor are finally listening to our community, recently speaking about the need for the project at the Council of Australian Governments.
“While talking up the project is one thing, Mark McGowan needs to put his money where his mouth is and include the project in the next WA State Budget after failing to include it last year.
“I just hope that it is not all lip service on the part of Mark McGowan and WA Labor.
“Our northern suburbs continue to grow and we continue to need better road infrastructure to support that growth, ease congestion and improve community connectivity.”
Mr Porter also said that WA Labor needed to seriously reconsider their decision to scrap funding for the widening of the Mitchell Freeway between Hodges Drive and Hepburn Avenue.
“For people in our northern suburbs this section is a bottleneck every day – it makes no sense to scrap this project and it must be made a priority.
“These projects are all about making our lives even easier and getting us home to our families even faster.”
