Liberal Government will build Yanchep rail

The Liberal Government is delivering a number of important road and rail projects in Pearce that will ease congestion, improve road safety and greatly increase the connectivity of Western Australia’s northern suburbs.

Federal Member for Pearce, Christian Porter, said that, subject to positive assessments of the business cases through Infrastructure Australia, projects such as the Yanchep rail line extension would receive significant funding from the Liberal Government.

“I've been working hard to get a better deal for WA on our GST return,” Mr Porter said.

“Part of the compensation package I have helped develop in the Coalition's 2017 Budget ensures we will fund a substantial amount of the rail line to Yanchep, subject to Infrastructure Australia approval of the business case.

“This is the critical funding that will make Yanchep rail a reality and the sooner the State Government can complete its business case, the sooner we can commence this important project.”

The substantial $2.3 billion infrastructure package for WA will provide a major boost to WA’s local economy, with 6,000 jobs expected to be created across the State.

Included in the package is a dual carriageway between Joondalup Drive and Flynn Drive on Wanneroo Road and a grade separated intersection at Wanneroo Road and Joondalup Drive.

The Liberal Government will fund $24.8 million of the $31 million dual carriageway and $40 million of the $50 million grade separated intersection.

“As someone who knows first-hand how congested the Wanneroo Road and Joondalup Drive intersection can be, I am pleased we are able to fund these vital infrastructure projects,” Mr Porter said.

“Anyone who uses Wanneroo Road or Joondalup Drive on their morning commute will know how beneficial these upgrades will be.”

The total $2.3 billion State-Federal Infrastructure package includes:

  • $1.86 billion reallocated from the Perth Freight Link project (including $1.2 billion in federal funding);
  • $211 million from savings on existing road projects; (including $166 million in federal funding); and
  • $226 million from the latest Liberal Government GST top-up payment for Western Australia
