Federal Member for Pearce, Christian Porter, supports the Coalition Government’s announcement that Western Australia will have a continuous naval shipbuilding industry.
The Coalition Government’s continuous shipbuilding strategy will ensure Australia retains a sovereign capability to build and sustain its naval vessels.
The contract with Austal to build and sustain 19 steel-hulled vessels will create over 120 jobs and secure Henderson as core to the re-elected Turnbull Coalition’s plan for jobs and growth.
The Government has also announced that the construction of 12 Offshore Patrol Vessels will begin in 2018 in Adelaide before transferring to Western Australia when the Future Frigate construction begins in Adelaide in 2020.
“The Offshore Patrol Vessel and Pacific Patrol Boat programs represent around $4 billion worth of investment in Australia’s future naval capabilities and our naval shipbuilding industry,” Mr Porter said.
“The Government’s historic continuous build program will deliver certainty for Western Australian shipbuilders for decades to come.
“These decisions will provide long-term stability for the Defence industry in Western Australia and create hundreds more jobs throughout the supply chain.
“I had the opportunity of visiting Austal’s shipyard in Henderson in August last year – it is an exceptional company with extensive facilities and for over 27 years have built a strong reputation for quality defence shipbuilding.”
“Through the initiatives in the Government’s Defence Industry Policy Statement we will help maximise the opportunities for the Australian Defence industry to drive jobs growth in Western Australia.
The Turnbull Government is committed to maximising Australian industry across this project and all of our naval shipbuilding projects.
This is an important part of our plan for Western Australia, whose economy is transitioning away from a mining boom and into broader based growth.
Unlike Labor, who cut more than $18 billion from the Defence budget and failed to order a single naval vessels from an Australian shipyard during their six year’s in Government, the Coalition Government is getting on with the job of securing our long term security and economic prosperity.
