National Landcare grants continue to flow across the Wheatbelt

Federal Member for Pearce, Christian Porter, has welcomed the Wheatbelt Natural Resource Management’s announcement that 21 local farmers in the Pearce region are set to share in $52,500 worth of grants under the National Landcare Programme.

The Wheatbelt NRM is providing grants for a second round of “Sustainable Agriculture, Healthy Soils, Healthy Rivers” to 21 farms between Wongan Hills and Yealering.

The $52,500 in funding is in addition to $278,462 worth of grants for the Pearce region announced in October this year, which was shared in by 32 landholders.

“Over the coming months, the Wheatbelt NRM will support local groups to carry out important on‑ground works to address some of the major environmental issues facing our region,” Mr Porter said.

“These grants will deliver better nutrient management through soil testing, crop tissue testing and evaluation of nutrient use efficiency – improving soil health and crop performance as well as reducing nutrients getting in to waterways.

“This funding will support local Landcare networks and community-based groups to restore local ecosystems and protect natural assets in Pearce so that the community can enjoy the long-term benefits of a healthy and livable environment.

“Importantly, the Coalition Government is ensuring that funding is invested locally to deliver real change at a grassroots level, safeguarding the productive capacity of the land for the future and protecting the environment.

“Investing locally is crucial because farmers, land-carers and community groups know what works best for their properties, their environment and their communities.”

The Australian Government is investing $2 billion to help support better natural resource management across Australia, with $1 billion to be invested through the National Landcare Programme, including over $450 million in regional funding to natural resource management organisations.
