National Broadband Network rolling out in Northam

Approximately 171 premises in Northam are a step closer to getting access to the National Broadband Network, with construction on the fixed wireless network now underway.

Federal Member for Pearce, Christian Porter, said it was an important milestone for the area, with greater certainty for homes and businesses as they prepare for superfast broadband services.

“The message for Northam residents is clear – superfast broadband is on its way,” Mr Porter said.

“The commencement of construction shows that the Coalition Government is delivering on its pledge to get the NBN rollout back on track and ensure all Australians can access fast, affordable broadband.

“The rollout is happening faster than ever since the Coalition Government took office and construction trials have demonstrated we can dramatically lower the cost and time it will take to deliver fast broadband to all Australians.

“Labor had six years in office and delivered almost nothing for regional and rural Australia, they over‑promised and under‑delivered to the residents of Pearce.”

Under the Coalition Government, NBN Co has increased the reach of its fixed wireless network, by 400 per cent, now covering more than 300,000 premises nationwide.

Late last year, NBN Co released a national rollout plan indicating that by mid-2016 one in every three homes and businesses across Australia will be able to connect to the NBN or have construction underway in their neighbourhood.

“Since the election, one of our key priorities has been to get the NBN rollout completed sooner, at less cost to taxpayers, and more affordably for consumers in the long run,” Mr Porter said.

“The Coalition Government’s multi-technology approach to the NBN rollout will save up to $30 billion, will see upgrades delivered six years sooner than under Labor, and will avoid internet retail bills increasing by up to 80 per cent.”

Potential customers can see the areas served by NBN Co’s fixed wireless service at www.nbnco.com.au/maps and can order a new service by contacting a retail service provider.
