Coalition kicks in $10,000 to Pearce surf life saving clubs

Federal Member for Pearce, Christian Porter, has welcomed the latest grants from the Coalition Government’s Beach Safety Equipment Fund, which will see $10,000 allocated to surf life saving clubs in Pearce.

“The Beach Safety Equipment Fund is part of the Coalition Government’s commitment to reduce drowning deaths and will be directed towards the purchase of vital rescue equipment, first aid and medical supplies,” Mr Porter said.

“The additional funding will ensure that the Yanchep SLSC and Quinns Mindarie SLSC can continue their great work and it also gives me a chance to thank our local life savers for the wonderful role they perform and the amazing work they do each and every summer.”

The Yanchep Surf Life Saving Club will use their $5,000 grant to purchase seven ¾ length soft rescue boards. These particular boards help the Yanchep SLSC to perform rescues during normal patrols and abalone special patrols.

“The Yanchep SLSC informs me that these boards are safer and easier to learn to use before transitioning to the full-size glass rescue boards,” Mr Porter said.

“Those volunteers that are younger or new to surf life saving can be apprehensive about using a full size board. The ¾ length soft rescue boards give them the skills and confidence they need before attempting to take a full size rescue board into a surf break.”

The Quinns Mindarie Surf Life Saving Club will use their $5,000 grant to purchase five new surf rescue boards, which the

y will also use in training new bronze medallion members.

The Beach Safety Equipment Fund is in addition to annual government funding of about $8.5 million to support water safety in Australia, which is being provided to the Royal Life Saving Society – Australia. SLSA, AUSTSWIM and Laurie Lawrence Swimming Enterprises.
